Sidney Cardel

Who is Sidney Cardel?

After graduating from Florida State University in 1981 with degrees in Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design, I told my mother I would one day have a store named after her. “Really?” she replied, “I would be honored.”

Today, I’m the one who is honored.

Sylvia Sidney McCardel Thomasson was a woman of outstanding character who touched many lives throughout her life.  A native Floridian, she was the youngest and only child of eight siblings to graduate high school where she was valedictorian. Continuing her education over the years , she eventually received her Specialist, Master’s and finally Doctorate of Education.

My mother did all of this while both working full-time in the education arena as the vice president of a college and raising her family with my father who managed a thoroughbred horse farm in Brooksville, a small town in central Florida.

Besides being an educator, she was an extraordinary writer and prolific artist — and this is where she first used the pen name, ‘Sidney Cardel.’  I’ve always loved this name and I know the creative gene I used in opening our store came from her…so thank you, Mom!

This photo is the inspiration for our logo!

In July of 1999, my father had a heart attack. My two sisters, brother and I traveled to be with him and our mother, around the clock, for three consecutive days. We stayed together, praying non stop and hoping he would survive. On the third day after his procedure, we learned he was going to make it, that he would be okay.  We were thrilled and greatly relieved!  That evening, we all went out to dinner to celebrate Dad’s heart!

The next morning would change our lives forever.  We awoke only to find our precious mother had passed away that very evening from a massive heart attack herself. The irony of it all was surreal. While our father lived six more years, our lives indeed changed forever on that day.

In 2011, Sidney Cardel’s opened its doors for the first time.  While I knew I would always have a store named after my Mom, it just took me thirty years to make it happen.  This photo of my mother standing by a palm tree, looking so fabulous and happy was taken by my dad on their honeymoon in 1956.  This was always one of my favorite photos of her….and what inspired our logo.

I miss her every day and take comfort knowing that she and my father are together…happy and healthy. They are in good hands with our Heavenly Father, and I believe they are celebrating Sidney Cardel’s for my daughter and me.

While I am most fortunate and blessed to have my daughter, Cara, work with me on occasion. I am so proud of Cara and know her Grandma and PaPa feel the same.

Thank you for allowing me to share our story. We hope that when you visit us in our store, you feel the same positive and loving spirit from us as we felt from her… Sidney Cardel.

With much love and appreciation for your business,

~ Cathy Thomasson

Education and Leadership

CATHY

CATHY THOMASSON | BOSS LADY & MASTER OF CREATIVE DESIGN

With a double major in Fashion Merchandising and Fashion Design from Florida State University, Cathy always knew she wanted to own her own store. Through the encouragement, trust and support of her dear friend and business partner, Sidney Cardel’s opened its door in October of 2011.

Cathy was a key account sales rep in the home, decorative accessory and gift industry for 20+ years prior to opening her store. Her knowledge of sales, customer service, product and design trends serve her well as a storeowner. Cathy has been a freelance artist for years and her work is seen in many places throughout the beaches. She is a member of numerous chambers and organizations, and volunteers her creative talents for numerous philanthropic charities and events.

A native Floridian, Cathy is a sports enthusiast and loves everything to do with fashion and living at the beach. She is surrounded by great friends, aka her ‘Chill Sisters’ and they are quite famous for, as Cathy says, “throwing one helluva party!”

Cathy feels so very blessed to have a great family support system and is thrilled to have her daughter Cara working alongside her. Together she feels they are quite the team!

CARA

CARA BURKY | MANAGER, MARKETER & SOCIAL MEDIAHOLIC

After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Studio Art and Art History, Cara joined her Mom in opening Sidney Cardel’s.  She thrives on the freedom to be creative and share her artistic background throughout the store.

Cara has been voted one of the top, young entrepreneurs in the 904 and she’s deeply involved in the community. She especially loves live music and so started her own business in August of 2017, Blue Jay Listening Room.  A native beach girl, you can often find her in the ocean or riding her skateboard down 1st Street.  She also loves Florida State Football and her yellow lab Mason.

“I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work alongside my Mom and be a part of this dream honoring my Grandma. It’s such a special thing to be able to do what we love while being surrounded by friends and family. We’ve got a great vibe going on and you can feel it when you walk in to our store… it’s just a happy place.”
